Iron ochre is a sludge-like substance created when iron, oxygen, and water are present in the soil and going through either a biological or chemical reaction. The chemical reaction occurs when iron in the soil is mixed with water. On the other hand, the biological process is a bacterium in the water table which will form a gel-like substance when exposed to air. When both reactions combine, the amount of iron ochre will greatly increase.
Iron ochre shows its presence from a few different signs. One of the more significant signs is orange stains found throughout your basement and generally concentrated in the sump pump. Along with this, other signs can be orange patches on your front lawn, an odor similar to rotten eggs, and an orange-colored sludge in the rainwater catch basin. Along with water damage throughout your home, there are many other issues that can come from untreated iron ochre. Your back flow valves can be obstructed as well as preventing proper drainage. These issues can lead to water accumulating around the foundation of your home. Your health can be affected by this too, as iron ochre can lead to the formation of mold.

At Foundation Restoration, our solution to iron ochre will make sure that your home doesn’t accumulate water damage and lead to further problems. We use a powder based substance that will remove iron ochre and any slime buildup. This substance is poured into the sump pump pit and once saturated will remove the surrounding iron ochre. The powder we use is 100% biodegradable and safe for the environment, so it’s great for a consistently healthy basement.
If you're looking to prevent additional iron ochre buildup in the future, we would recommend waterproofing your basement. Waterproofing your basement would protect your basement walls and floors from the reactions that cause iron ochre to grow and help maintain a healthy home.
