Caring for your Sump Pump

Many homeowners don’t think about their sump pump until they’re standing in an inch of water. In our “What Is” series, we’re breaking down how this silent guardian works and why a simple yearly checkup is the difference between a dry home and a flooded disaster. To keep your sump pump in “tip-top” shape, follow this simple maintenance checklist at least once a year (or quarterly if you live in a high-rain area):

1. Safety First!

Unplug the unit before you start. Never perform maintenance while the pump is connected to power.

2. Clear the Debris

Lift the pump if needed and clear any muck, stones, or debris from the basin. A clog is one of the most common reasons sump pumps fail.

3. Scrub the Inlet Screen

Check the screen at the bottom of the pump. If the inlet screen is covered in grime, the pump can’t pull water efficiently. Use a stiff brush to get it clean.

4. Inspect the “Exit Strategy”

Head outside! Ensure your discharge pipe carries water away from your foundation, ideally 10-20 ft. Check for clogs, frozen patches, or broken seals.

5. The 5-Gallon Stress Test

Plug it back in and pour a 5-gallon bucket of water into the basin.

  • Watch the float switch: Does it lift easily?

  • Listen: Does the motor sound smooth?

  • Check the clock: Does it empty the pit quickly?

  • Watch the pipe: water shouldn’t flow back into the pit once the pump shuts off.

Pro-Tip: If you notice heavy corrosion or the pipe seems stuck, don’t force it. It might be time for a professional replacement before the next storm hits.
