Iron Ochre Treatment

Iron ochre is a common issue in many homes and can become a serious threat to the performance of a basement waterproofing system. This reddish-brown sludge forms when naturally occurring iron bacteria in the soil or groundwater interact with oxygen and dissolved iron. The result is a thick, sticky buildup that can clog drainage systems, restrict water flow, and place additional strain on sump pumps and other waterproofing components.

Homeowners often notice iron ochre as a rust-colored slime or residue that may be accompanied by a sulfur-like odor. Left untreated, it can accumulate inside sump pits, drain tiles, and foundation drainage systems, reducing their effectiveness and increasing the risk of water intrusion.

At Foundation Restoration, we use a specialized powder-based treatment designed to break down iron ochre and other biological buildup within the drainage system. Once applied to the sump pit and drainage network, the treatment works to eliminate existing buildup and restore proper water flow. The product we use is 100% biodegradable and environmentally safe, making it an effective solution for maintaining a healthy basement environment.

Because iron ochre can continue to develop over time, regular maintenance is essential for long-term waterproofing performance. That’s why Foundation Restoration installs clean-out ports on all new drainage systems whenever possible. These access points allow for easier inspection, cleaning, and maintenance, helping ensure your drainage system continues operating at peak efficiency.

With years of experience addressing iron ochre and the unique challenges it creates, Foundation Restoration has the knowledge and tools to keep your drainage system clear, your waterproofing system functioning properly, and your basement protected from unwanted water intrusion.
