How to Improve The Air Quality In Your Home

If you’ve noticed musty smells, your allergies flaring up, or the air in your home not feeling as fresh as it should, the problem might be under your feet. Your crawl space plays a major role in the health of your home. If it’s damp, moldy, or unsealed, that air is likely carrying irritants, humidity, or other potentially toxic substances right into your living space.

    A Little Science for You

As warm air rises, cool air from the crawl space is sucked into the living areas of your home. This is called the “stack effect”, it’s the same way a chimney works. This, combined with other factors, means a significant amount of the air you breathe actually comes from beneath your home (gross, we know). In fact, up to 50% of the air you breathe on your first floor comes from your damp, unsealed crawl space. By reducing moisture, soil gases, mold, mildew and improving the overall air quality in your crawl space, the air you breathe in your home will be cleaner and healthier.

So what can you do to improve your home’s air quality?

    Encapsulate your crawl space.

Encapsulation seals off your crawl space from outside moisture and pollutants using a thick vapor barrier, sealed vents, and optional insulation or dehumidifiers. Once the work is complete, within a few days, you may notice:

    🦠 Musty smells fading fast
    🌬️ Cleaner, drier air
    🤧 Relief from allergy symptoms
💧 Lower humidity throughout your home

The long-term benefits? Lower energy bills, better HVAC efficiency, improved protection from structural damage and of course, a healthier, more comfortable home. While the encapsulation itself can often be completed in just a few days, you’ll need to schedule an appointment to get started. Contact Foundation Restoration today for a free estimate.
